To tie up my year of working with the wonderfull team at MTV I was invited to produce a whole set design for a room at the EMA after party, hosted by BATTY BASS RECORDS for which I am creative director, running it alongside head of the label Hannah Holland.

The theme for the party was outer space which fits perfectly with my whole vision for the world of Batty Bass. Our room was called - 'BATTY BASS - THE GALACTIC GATECRASH'.

I took a team of four, along with myself over to Belfast where we walked into a white space and transformed in in just four days. The dream team comprised of the very talented Luke Embden,

amazing artist and body painter Emma Allen, prop maker and designer extraordinaire Cordelia Weston and my fabulous PA Saskia Wickins.

Tribal mulit-coloured mannequins stood as priestesses along a 18 foot mural of futute talismans and symbols spinning out of control, neon lights lit the room and across every angle of the chess board floor, candy colored TV's fuzzed, plazma globes electrified and neon paint dripped. I even made a secret cinema showing a crazy edit of my favourite 80's and sci fi films like, 'Earth Girls Are Easy', Lawn Mower Man, Flash Gordon and Trancers, edited beautifully by film maker Joe Cohen.

I didn't want to leave, I wanted to live in the space forever!

I was asked by I.D Magazine to come up with a design for some high heels that represented the iconic magazine, as an image to aid the launch of an amazing shoe design competition they are running in partnership with Alberto Guardiani.
I wanted to create a design that was a nod to the early years of I.D and the 'straight up' style of street fashion photography they pioneered - so here it is - 'The Straight Up'!

Myself and BattyBass partner Hannah Holland spent an afternoon at the I.D Covers exhibition at The Red Gallery, where I created some live art to Hannah's soundtrack.

Alex Noble’s “House of Women” for Spring/Summer 2012 is inspired by the Powell and Pressburger film ‘The Black Narcissus’ – the story of a group of nuns who’s beliefs, morals and sanity are challenged as they establish a sanctuary in the Himalayan mountains. This new tribe of women, caught between their sisterhood and the embrace of their new cultural surroundings represent a new sexuality, femininity and power. Themes of Agony and Ecstasy, Sacrifice for Beliefs, and Renunciation are explored and the nuns of the House of Women are likened to Geishas, with Japanese screen prints inspiring this season’s palette of burnt orange and Prussian blues and silhouettes influenced by Kimono and traditional Samurai amour.

This season georgette and jacquard silks, crepe satin, chiffons and pure silk are fashioned into blouses and gowns, reworked with dynamic silhouettes through traditional corsetry techniques and quilting creating texture and structure. Digital prints run throughout the collection featuring screaming flowers, psychedelic orgies and cocooned women, appearing encased as if trapped underneath sculptural amour. The wearer is encased by boning and ever evolving sheer printed layers in constant metamorphosis upon the body.

I was recently asked to design a few pieces for top female tennis player Bethanie Mattek-Sands, it was in conjunction with a film that was being made by Sony Ericsson called Hot Shots. Bethanie has a keen interest in fashion and loves to wear rule breaking outfits on the court.
The main influence for the piece was obviously tennis so I created garments for her focusing on tennis balls of course.
The dress is pretty mad and literally lit up the room at The Womens Opening Party for Wimbledon at The Kensington Roof Gardens.

I also designed a jacket for Bethanie to wear onto court at Wimbledon, in keeping with tradition the jacket was completely white, with white tennis balls and white shoe lace fringing to match.

MTV run a website called PLAYGROUND with SWATCH Watches, this year the site is focusing mainly on the wonderful world of fashio and has invited five guest editors to add content to the site, this includes a short documentary about each of us and some studies of our work, and a TALK@ where we each talk to a singer about each others work, style, fashion and the creative world.
I was asked to be a guest editor along side accessories designer FRED BUTLER, photographer and co founder of DAZED AND CONFUZED magazine RANKIN, and two more to be announced as they launch!

As part of The Bright Young Things promotion I was invited to create a window and dresses for, I was asked back to do something live and interactive on the shop floor, for the run up to Selfridges.

I just did a project with The Urdang Academy Dance school. I designed the mens dance troop, 'STRIKE's outfits - and 'the only girl in the world' - for their part in the Move IT! Competition at Earls Court.

'COUTURE of the WILD' - ALEX NOBLE SELFRIDGES WINDOW for BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS.

Selfridges invited myself and a group of other up and coming designers and artists to create their January windows and design some product for in store.
After an initial conversation with the creative manager about the 'do's and don'ts' of the windows she mentioned no taxidermy! So I decided to flip that on its head and do a high end couture taxidermy lab - I pushed the concept to create something surreal, serene and I hope quite beautiful.

Part of the promotion was design some product to go in store at Selfrdidges - I created two pieces of art work running with the themes of the window and my debut collection for Fashion week. The art work was then printed onto silk Georgette and I made ten exclusive dresses for intsore - there now! BUY BUY!

I was recently commissioned by DJ Jerome Sydenham to create t-shirt designs to celebrate the 15 year anniversary of his record label IBADAN RECORDS.
Jerome himself is of Nigerian descent and the label is named after Ibadan in Nigeria, but with the label being very much Berlin based and inspired I wanted to create a fusion of these two influences, looking at these two places, Constructivist art work and textile prints - I came up with these......

MY FIRST WEDDING DRESS

I just created my first wedding dress for a very dear old friend of mine Sharmaine. Shar is a unique character with many sides to her personality and so I knew the dress needed to be classical with an alternative edge. She had no idea what the dress looked like until the day before the wedding when I met her in Copenhagen. The wedding took place in Denmark on a beautiful island called Mon. Here's the dress!

I made a few pieces for Lady Ga Ga to wear at this years VMA's. You never know what will be used and the two head pieces I made weren't, but hopefully will show up on her lovely head at some point soon so I cant show them to you yet!. But I wasn't suprised when I saw the amazing work of my friend and contemporary Franc Fernandez' Meat dress - well done Franc!
What Ga Ga did use was a huge black and bottle green net bustle skirt that I made to add a little extra drama to the McQueen dress she wore on the red carpet. I had the dress in the studio and it is absolutely stunning. We miss you Alexander. x

THE EXQUISITE CORPSE EXHIBITION

My final show as curator for the Dalston Superstore was a huge success, I am so happy with the standard and diversity of work and the effort the artists put in. The pieces really show the identity of the artists and this subconscious portrayal of them selves is what makes the work so interesting. The opening night was completely packed and turned into a great party. Hopefully the show will travel as every one is so impressed.

My final show as Curator for the Dalston Superstore is 'The Exquisite Corpse' an amazing group show filled with eclectic cadavers and super talented artists from the fields of fashion and art combined.
It's the last show for the Gallery superstore and me, but not my last show as a curator as I hope and plan for more exhibiting opportunities as artist and curator.

The Gallery Superstore invites artists for it’s fourth group show, to explore the themes and practices of the parlor game originating ‘Exquisite Corpse’. A name given by the Surrealists when they first played the game also known as ‘Consequences’. In it’s original form it was a play of sentences and adjective nouns. Finding the practice playful and enriching, the surrealist developed it into more of an art form that has been celebrated to this day.
And can now be seen as drawing, collage and sculpture and inspires artists to fashion designers and photographers.

The morbidness of the games title seems to push through when inspiring previous art works of this theme, moving away from the playful to the more subversive, as seen in the work of Hans Bellmer’s ‘poupee’ series and the sculptures of Louise Bourgeois.
The art of creating figures from a varied number of objects gave a way to represent characters and symbolize parts of their psyche with effective and sometimes disturbing results. The random objects used may reflect the jumbled assortment of ideas and emotions manifested by the artist. To show physical strength or weakness as well as mental intent.

With the modern obsessions for body modification, ground breaking scientific developments and constant referencing to the past and the future. This exhibition gives artists scope to produce a figure that is diverse and unique, surreal and hap hazard or meticulous in creation.
The concept gives access to explore gender and social roles with the freedom to be playful as well as serious in discussion, what will we learn about the artist by what they create?

The exhibition seeks to be 3D installation lead, with the artists life size ‘cadavers’ hanging from the Superstore meat hooks, as an eclectic morgue of objects of intrigue.

Very talented illustrator Richard Kilroy has launched a paper dedicated to his passion and obsession - illustration.
He very kindly asked to interview me for the paper and a very nice bunch of questions it was too.

You're a very multi-faceted creative talent: you're a creative director, artist, illustrator, designer, stylist and have also been involved with installations and window displays, has it always been important to you to keep this element of diversity to your work? I know you've mentioned in the past that you are the type of person who can get bored easily!
It is very important and also very natural, to me everything is interlinked and influenced by each other. There are areas that I've moved away from but inevitably always go back to in one way or another, I think its easier for me to look at the whole as apposed to sections of things. I am commissioned for sections of projects within fashion and costume design but you always need to know or be able to guess the bigger picture.
It's also been a real journey working through all these practices, and always wanting to be able to do more.

How important is the illustrative element to your work, and illustration in general?

I suppose its integral to everything I do, it's a tool as well as an art form and a job. It all starts with a sketch, an illustration. It's such a broad term really, when is a doodle and illustration, and an illustration fine art? Its hard I think to put labels on different practices of an artist.
But there is something about a more 'illustrative' style of work that can elude more to a narrative and have an accessibility for the viewer, maybe this comes from child hood.

I can see a lot of strong influences in your illustrative work, such as art nouveau, jean-paul goude and surrealism. What are the biggest influences or thoughts driving your distinctive style?

My influences are really broad, early obsessions with films like 'Clash of the Titans' lead to studying pre-raphaelite paintings and Art Nouveau. Alphonse Mucha has been a huge inspiration, from subject, to symbolism and composition, I was really interested by the mix of text and poster art with the organic lines of his female subjects and flowers. The interest in text meant that Pop Art really inspired me also. I was surrounded by many influences growing up, with architects as parents, two older creative siblings and London as a back drop.

I think I'm always aware of a narrative, however vague, I have often titled a piece before I've started it, and the title is very important to me as part of the work. I like my imagery to have different forces at work and be anachronistic. My work can be quite erotic with strong sexual undertones, in their many guises. I like to create beautiful imagery which is somehow turned on it's head or subverted. Polished exteriors with dark undertones I suppose.
I don't try to adhere to 'my' style, or guide lines etc when I create works, it's very organic and is just what comes out. A personal style is called that because it is personal. My influences have played a strong part in this of course and your influenced by things that relate to you, so it's really quite hard to say what thoughts drive it.

The taut exhibition seems to fit perfectly with your style of exploring the combination of art and fashion, how did go about getting your ideas for your drawings? There's a terrific dark quality to them, almost sadistic in their imagery, is this element integral to the 'Alex Noble' style?
There's a feel to your work that reminds me of Alexander McQueen's seductive rebellious tendencies.

'Seductive rebellious tendencies' - that's great, I'll remember that! The 'Taut' show was perfect for me yes and I did have a realization half way through that it was quite autobiographical in a surreal way. As I've always been pulled between Fashion and Art and it seems a recent thing that you can be both and be taken seriously by both industries, a real sign of the times I think.
The ideas for the work started with the concept of the show and the format I was given as to how the work had to be hung. I had fifteen perspex squares, all at different sizes to use as my mounts. The idea was to create a satirical comic strip about the many sides of Fashion and Art, seeing them as two characters, stealing, raping, lavishing each other. The style was intended to be quite different, a lot more ink and free hand, but I suppose my innate 'style' took over and I was very pleased when it did.
The dark and sadistic quality is integral now, it's the contrast and subversion and surrealism that drives through, but I always want it to be beautiful, even romantic, or my idea of it.
To go back to influences, when you look at the work of HR Geiger, Allen Jones or even Audbery Beardlsley, it's instantly beautiful, but always with a dark narrative running through it.

Which illustrations of yours in particular have you stepped back from and thought "YES, that's just fantastic, I don't want to change it at all"?

I'm quite good at finishing work, or leaving it unfinished is often part of my aesthetic. This doesn't always apply and there are pieces that have driven me completely mad, but then some how grown on me over time? It's strange but I'm not into perfection so sometimes it's good not to love everything about what you've done. It's so subjective anyway!
I don't think I ever think "YES", more like, "ok, cool".

You've exhibited work extensively, most notably at Dalston Superstore where you've helped curate, i particularly loved what i saw from the 'nouveau nude' exhibition. Is the gallery space something that you feel will forever be integral to you?

It such a broad term now isn't it? Any where can be a gallery which is great. I think exhibiting work will always be integral to me, it's so important showing your work to people, and getting it out there is really good for the soul and brings real happiness to your self and other people.
Curating the exhibitions has been a great experience and really is another art form in it's self.
The 'Nouveau Nude show' was definitely a favourite, I bought together artists and photographers from around the world who celebrate the male nude form. The idea behind it was to look at the recent trend in the public domain of the use of the nude male, in fashion and advertising. And how what had seemed to be such a controversial subject had become so trendy and bankable. But it seems the real controversy is actually about size, not just flesh.

Would you say that fashion illustration is a tough world, and your approach to diversity is important in order to survive?
I think it's a tough world in general, especially for creatives. Diversity is important to survive as the more you've got going on the more you'll work, but it does mean that sometimes you have to be three people at the same time, so diversity is tough too.

You've had a fantastic twelve months in terms of career, what have been the highlights so far? Is it fair to assume your collaboration with Lady Gaga, Philip Treacy and Nicola Formichetti for the Brits is close to the top?

Yes of course, that really was such a great experience, I felt so British, being so excited to also see it on the telly! I did a cover illustration for Wound magazine too that I was really proud of. It seemed all encompassing again like the Taut show. An image of the Prada Transformer building, an insane structure that rotates onto different sides for different events. It was architecture, fashion and illustration wrapped up in one.

Your creations for Gaga have gained you some major exposure, it's fair to say the red bandage dress in Bad Romance and the lace Brits number are already cemented in music history! Would you ever illustrate her? I can SO imagine an Alex Noble illustrated Lagy Gaga cd cover. You should pitch the idea, or if not, i will.

Of course I would, I really want to move into doing more art work for artists as well as clothes, actually a full mixed media composition. Creating the outfit, photography and then the post production art work. Record sleeve art work has been a strong influence too and I've done a small collection for the Batty Bass label, they are all very stylised for the BB brand and it would be nice broaden that way.
Bring it all on really!

Do you ever consider the possibility of developing into fully fledged collections or shows for your clothing creations?

Not right now, I'm really interested in making one off pieces, it's more like art I suppose. And my designs are much more suited to that clientele also, for music videos and stage performances. You need to devote your life to creating collections, especially working to season, and then if you miss one...........
I like the freedom I have right now to work on so many different projects.

Where do you see yourself heading with your work over the coming months? Do you have any planned projects at the moment you can share with us?

Everything is top secret I'm afraid. I am planning a large collection of new works. Large mixed media pieces, developing the masking tape further, using oils and and an even darker subject matter.

And finally, we at Decoy love to fantasize, what would be your dream collaboration / commission? What have you secretly fantasized about?

To be honest everything is going pretty well at the moment and dreams are coming true so.........I fantasize about having a solo show at the Guggenheim in New York or some where like that. Or design the costumes for an amazing sci fi romance, or opera. I'd like to be given a project that utilizes all my skills, like an old stately building to completely decorate and install and throw insanely dressed models off the roof, or something like that?

FLORENCE WELCH WEARS ALEX NOBLE FOR LATITUDE FEST

I had the huge pleasure of working with Florence and the Machine front woman Florence Welch, such a talent and such a beauty, like one of the women in the Pre-Raphaelite paintings I obsessed over as a teenager.
If you haven't seen a live performance yet then you are really missing out.
It was also my first meetings with her stylist, the very lovely Aldene Johnson. Who invited me to design an outfit for Florence's head line performance at Latitude festival.

There are probably around 2000 separate beads on this out fit, you cant really see them in the pics but it's a labour of love that sadly I quite enjoy. Expect to see a lot more bead work soon.

JONNY WOO WEARS ALEX NOBLE FOR LOVE BOX FEST

The amazingly talented and surreal drag poet/performer/legend Jonny Woo asked me to create one of his many looks for the LOVEBOX festival.
I had wanted to work with Jonny for a long time as we are old friends so this was an exciting opportunity and it was to be worn on the main stage.
I had a few ideas but decided I wanted to create something inspired by our vibrant local area of Dalston, draw reference from carnivals, birds of paradise, Studio 54 and bondage of course!
This was the final result and I was very happy with it.

This is the fifteen piece collection I produced for the exhibition, a surreal and satirical, fashion illustartive cartoon strip, telling the story of the many sides of the tense relationship of fashion and art.

I am curating an exhibition this September called 'FASHION, FETISH AND THE INANIMATE OBJECT', which also discusses the relationship between these two cultural and subversive power houses.

Art and fashion are like a pair of problematic lovers: not sure that they are good for each other; uncertain that they even understand each other and yet inextricably linked and attracted to each other…
And where better than in Belgium to consider this dichotomy? Belgium, whose medieval city-states founded their wealth and importance on expertise in textiles; whose old master paintings still form the basis for what we understand as ‘costume history’ in northern Europe. Belgium, whose disproportionate influence on international fashion thinking in much more recent decades is, perhaps, only matched by the disproportionate influence its artists and patrons wield in international terms.
It is, therefore, entirely fitting and appropriate that as the special programme forming part of Trajector Art Fair, Taut develops its discourses – through events and a special exhibition programme- in the midst of a young and vibrant international art happening in the middle of Brussels.
Taut will be curated and programmed by Laurent Dombrowicz and Ken Pratt. Their respective roles as Fashion Director and Art Editor – and later as Joint Editors in Chief - of the lauded niche magazine Wound perhaps explains why they are so suited to this task. From their respective fashion creative and art curatorial backgrounds, whilst at the creative helm of Wound, they created a thinking magazine in which the respective disciplines of fashion, art, architecture and design always developed a thematic discourse; each discipline operating with autonomy and credible in its own field, and yet always in dialogue with the other respective disciplines. In many ways, Wound remains one of the few ‘glossy’ magazines that managed to offer its positions on fashion, art, architecture and design on equal footing.
In programming the events and exhibition manifestations for Taut, they will once again launch into navigating a paracours through the intersections between fashion and art, though this time in physical space and real time rather than between the covers of a magazine.
As was always the case in Wound, Taut will address serious questions of the roles and positions of fashion and art in contemporary culture to a broad, thinking audience. Intelligent without being humourless, thoughtful without being insular, Taut is sure to be a treat for anyone interested in fashion and art. If their published efforts have already shown that they entirely refute all notions that fashion is only for the superficial and art only for a pretentious elite, then Taut promises to be a continuation of the paths they have already developed together so well.

Feathered horns for La Ga Ga, created for the Monsters Ball tour and also for restaurant visit, I dont know how they must have fit in the car? Thanks to the lovely Simon for his assistance on these.

This is the Sacred Heart Gold Chimera outfit I created for the tour, she wears it in the Monster section and erupts out of a Charlie Lemindu hair chandelier.

The hood is gold chainmail, dripping down to a crystal and bead scared heart, bleeding down to a hairy crutch, the sleeves are made from feathers and layers and layers of hair.

One of the highest and most exciting points of my career, asked to collaborate with Ga Ga, Philip Treacy and Nicola Formichetti to create a most iconic outfit for such an amzing performance and the evening of a three award win!

This exhibition seeks to celebrate and explore the male nude, celebrating those who examine, muse and obsess over this controversial subject.

Exhibiting work from a new generation of home grown and international artists: from Paris duo Exterface intensely stylized nude narratives to Canada’s Mikel Marton, who’s male nude portraits are winning critical acclaim across America and around the world.
Alongside photography, mixed media work and 3D installation will be covers from ground breaking Butt magazine and fanzines including New York’s PinUps and Spunk. Aiding the review of the Male Nude’s place in a commercial and subcultural context.

Male nudity has always been more subversive than it’s female counterpart, falling in and out of popularity through out art history, but always celebrated and developed by the gay and erotic arts.

The ‘gaze’ has shifted from being predominantly on women to men in fashion, film and advertising, and within the last decade the increasing trend for homo eroticism and full frontal male nudity begs the question, what is the place of the male nude in contemporary society? And will it ever develop and evolve into being as common place as a pair of breasts in a newspaper?

As it takes more and more to shock us, what now is the reaction towards the male nude,
and can the more untraditional images and growing trend for alternative visions of beauty be viewed in their own right with out being labelled homo erotic, classicist or pornographic.

This is an unfinished section of a new piece of work, originally titled 'David Loves David' but is now called 'Original Sin', up now at Dalston Super Store.
This piece was up at the last exhibition at Dalston SS and is titled 'The Hand Maids Tale', and is a dark view of the future, where man kind has done so damage to them selves and the earth that the human reprodructive system is failing to produce enough eggs and sperm for procreation. Therefore a huge market has emerged for homosexual sperm and eggs, to give heterosexual partners the opportunity to conceive. Would you 'Pay For Gay?'

I was more than impressed by the works that were submitted and it became a very diverse show, exhibiting installations, projection's, painting, illustration, photography and even tea towels!

The latest issue of Spain's biannual super chic mens style magazine HERCULES is out now. The whole issue is dedicated to legendary iconic director Pedro Almodovar. A whole range of people including Gaultier, Galliano, Tom Ford and Karl Largerfeld have contributed art works to the issue. Almodovar requested that imagery of his two ultimate screen goddesses was included and the guys at Hercules incited me to do it! Thank you Hercules!

I'm off to Madrid next week for an exhibition of all the art work and to hopefully meet the inspiration himself!

About three years ago I was asked by my photographer friend Morgan
to style a shoot for him, just a test, but a great idea.
The story is all about a girl who goes walking in the woods and finds a rope snake, frightened at first, she then befriends the snake, falls in love, has sex, makes a rope baby and then tragically is
killed by her snaky lover.
Three years later its picked up by a new magazine in Panama called STATUS and it makes the front cover!
It just shows you never know whats going to happen!!

All this week I have been wrapping, scaling and tattooing to create this mermaid for the boutique NO-ONE.

My fetish for masking tape carries on into ever changing shapes and forms. This time a fish with boobs and great taste in accessories!

Mermaids have been an obsession of mine from a very young age but this is the first time I've made one, life size too. It's great seeing fantasies come to life.......next on the list a mermaid tattoo and then maybe a Chimera made from masking tape as well.

This creepy, sexy thing will be up for about two weeks so go and check her out.

Every so often I will post music videos that I love, usually because of the styling, the track, videos that influenced me, that I wish I was involved in and that take me back to early memories which then become apparent that these were things that shaped my life, style and work. Heres a few to get started........I love love love this video, this is the video that really made me first want to get into music video styling, it was so appealling, models moving to music, the humour, the style, the grade.....amazing! Styled by Fee Doran who I then went and worked for for two years as a youngster, I then went on to style a video for Zoowoman, but with only one model it's not a touch on this.My final collection at college was named after this track

Undeniably I am an 80's kid, born in 81 it is that decade that is most relevant to me and seems to seep out into alot of my work, watch this video and need I say more....... a master piece!
